Our services

Eczema, Psoriasis & Recurring Rashes

Eczema and psoriasis tend to come and go. The doctor assesses how severe your skin is, looks for triggers and sets out a treatment plan, including moisturisers, creams and ointments, and what to do when it flares.

If your skin does not settle or needs stronger treatment, we refer you to a dermatologist and can continue your care together.

  • Eczema (atopic dermatitis)
  • Psoriasis
  • Contact dermatitis and other recurring rashes
  • Treatment plans for flares and day-to-day care
  • Skin infections on top of eczema
  • Dermatology referral when needed

Acne & Rosacea

The doctor assesses the type and severity of your acne or rosacea and recommends treatment based on current evidence. This may include creams, gels, antibiotics or hormonal treatment, and advice on skin care.

Some treatments need blood tests or regular review, and the doctor explains these before you start. Severe acne, or acne that may scar, is referred to a dermatologist.

  • Acne in teenagers and adults
  • Rosacea and facial redness
  • Creams, gels and tablets where appropriate
  • Monitoring during treatment
  • Dermatology referral for severe acne

Fungal Skin & Nail Infections

Fungal infections are common in a warm, humid climate. The doctor examines the skin or nails and treats with creams or tablets.

Nail changes are not always fungal, so a nail sample may be sent to a laboratory to confirm the diagnosis before a long course of tablets is started.

  • Ringworm (tinea) of the body
  • Athlete's foot and jock itch
  • Fungal nail infections
  • Skin and nail samples where needed
  • Antifungal creams and tablets

Hair Loss

Hair loss can be inherited, or caused by stress, illness, thyroid problems, low iron, medicines or scalp conditions. The doctor examines your scalp and arranges blood tests where needed to look for a cause.

Treatment depends on the cause. The doctor explains the options, how long they take to show an effect, and their possible side effects. Referral to a dermatologist is arranged when needed.

  • Pattern hair loss in men and women
  • Patchy hair loss (alopecia areata)
  • Hair shedding after illness, stress or childbirth
  • Blood tests for thyroid, iron and other causes
  • Treatment options and their side effects

Mole & Skin Lesion Checks

The doctor examines moles and skin spots that are new or changing, using a dermatoscope (a hand-held magnifier with a light) where helpful.

If a spot needs a closer look, a small sample (biopsy) may be taken and sent to a laboratory, or you are referred to a dermatologist. Spots are not removed or destroyed without a diagnosis when there is any doubt about what they are.

  • New or changing moles
  • Skin spots that bleed, itch or do not heal
  • Examination with a dermatoscope
  • Skin biopsy where appropriate
  • Dermatology referral when needed

How it works

  1. Examination

The doctor asks how the spot has changed and examines it, using a dermatoscope where helpful.

  2. Decision

The doctor explains whether the spot can be watched, needs a biopsy, or should be seen by a dermatologist.

  3. Results and next steps

Biopsy results are reviewed with you, and any further treatment or referral is arranged.

Medical care, not aesthetics

These services treat skin conditions. Cosmetic treatments, such as laser for pigmentation, are separate and offered at Family Health Medical Centre after a doctor's assessment.
