IV Fluids & IV Iron
By appointment
IV fluids may be given when you are dehydrated and cannot keep enough fluid down, for example during a stomach infection. They are not offered as a routine pick-me-up for minor illness or for wellness. You are observed at the clinic during and after the drip, and transferred to hospital if you need more care.
IV iron may be suitable for confirmed iron deficiency when tablets have not worked or cannot be taken. The doctor first looks for the cause of the low iron and checks whether it is safe for you.
- IV fluids for dehydration when clinically indicated
- Short observation at the clinic
- IV iron for confirmed iron deficiency, where appropriate
- Blood tests before and after treatment
- Transfer to hospital if more care is needed
How it works
Assessment
The doctor examines you, reviews your blood tests and decides whether a drip is needed and safe for you.
Treatment
The drip is given in the clinic by trained staff, with your pulse, blood pressure and wellbeing checked throughout.
Observation
You stay for a period of observation after the drip to check for any reaction.
Follow-up
You leave with advice on what to watch for and a plan for follow-up, such as repeat blood tests.
